How good are the Sony WH-CH720N Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones?
I mean, this is Sony – sound and vision are what they do, right?
But aside from that Bowie earworm, the headphones have been designed for total comfort, noise reduction and of course, great-quality sound. We've done the research, after all.
What's the sound like?
In a word, awesome. Crystal clear, balanced, natural and super high-quality – largely thanks to the Integrated Processor V1 and Digital Sounds Enhancement Engine (DSEE) packed in. Yes, it's a mouthful but it means you're getting to hear every last note just the way your favourite bands and artists intended you to. And that can't be argued with, can it?
How does it do this magical thing? Well, it ain't magic, we can tell you that. When music is made, it's often compressed – and with many files, that's just the way it is. But with the DSEE helping out, the rich detail that's often lost during compression is restored to the point where it sounds just like the original – clear, natural, and absolutely gorgeous.
And that's not all – with these babies, you can tailor how you listen to make sure that every last track sounds just the way you like it. Whether you want to opt for a pre-set optimised to the genre you're into that day, or go further and create your own presets, you can do just that using the equaliser feature in the Sony Headphones Connect app.
How good is the noise reduction tech?
Now all that glorious sound would be wasted if you couldn't hear it over noise on the street, right? That's what Sony were thinking too, which is why their Integrated Processor V1 (remember that one from earlier?) and their Dual Noise Sensor work together to level up the noise-cancelling tech in these headphones. If you love shutting out the sound of the world around you, look no further.
There's also a newly developed Wind Noise Reduction Structure packed into these headphones (and the dual mics in each earcup) that works to keep the pesky breeze away from your tunes – and if that's not enough there's Ambient Sound mode, too.
Ambient Sound has been designed to use the feedback mics on board to capture (you guessed it) ambient sound as you're listening and ensure you're getting all the music without totally cutting you off from your environment. Which is handy, sometimes. You can adjust the ambient sound across 20 levels or use the smart Focus on Voice setting to chat with your mates without the need to take off your headphones. All the Sony Headphones Connect app, of course.
How comfortable are they?
Oh-so-lovely. Seriously. The Sony WH-CH720N headphones are crafted with synthetic leather and urethane and include soft oval-shaped earpads that are optimised to fit just about anyone snugly and comfortably.
They're also lightweight, at only 192g (we've had heavier phones!) and totally ergonomic so you can make the most of the brilliant battery life and keep them on for as long as you please.
What's the battery like?
We said brilliant, we meant brilliant. One charge can give you up to 35 hours of battery life, no problem – and up to 50 hours if you're not using the Noise Cancelling feature. Either way, that's plenty of power to keep you going day and night – but you can get an additional hour of battery from a quick, three-minute charge. And you can't deny that sometimes that's all the pick-me-up you need to kick back for a little longer with your music.
