Keep your private stuff actually private, not just “hidden in plain sight.”
Whether you’re planning gifts, saving receipts, or building endless to-do lists, the Apple Notes app has quietly become one of the most powerful tools on your iPhone. And in 2026, it’s way more secure (and useful) than most people realise.
Let’s level up how you use it.
🔒 Lock your Notes properly.
If you’ve ever worried about someone casually scrolling through your notes — good news. You can lock them down in seconds. Here’s how:
- Open the Notes app
- Tap the Note you want to protect
- Tap the three-dot menu (•••) in the top right
- Tap "Lock"
- Choose how you want to secure it:
- Face ID / Touch ID
- Your device passcode
- Or a separate Notes password
💡 Pro tip: Newer iOS versions let you use your iPhone passcode instead of creating a separate password — much smoother and harder to forget.
Once locked, the note is fully encrypted and hidden from previews.
👀 Viewing and unlocking a note.
When you need access again, unlocking is just as simple. To open a locked note:
- Open the locked note
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode
To remove the lock completely:
- Open the note
- Tap the lock icon at the top
- Authenticate again to disable locking
📄 Scanning documents into Notes.
To scan a document:
- Open the Notes app
- Create or open a note
- Tap the camera or attachment icon
- Tap "Scan Documents"
- Position your iPhone over the document and capture
Your iPhone will automatically crop, straighten, and enhance the scan. To manage the scanned file:
- Tap the scanned document inside the note
- Tap the share icon (box with arrow) in the top right
- Choose what you want to do (save, share, or move it)
Your secret’s safe with Notes.
With more personal data stored on your phone than ever, Notes effectively becomes a lightweight secure vault. Locking individual notes ensures sensitive information stays protected even if someone gets access to your device.
Notes is no longer just a basic app for reminders — it’s a fully integrated productivity and privacy tool built into iOS. Once you start using locked notes and built-in scanning together, it becomes a central hub for both organisation and security.
