You know what they say — sharing is caring. And one of the easiest ways to help someone out is by sharing your mobile data when they need a connection.

That’s exactly what a mobile hotspot does. Whether you’ve never used one before or you regularly tether your laptop on the go, setting up a hotspot on your iPhone takes just a few taps.

What is a mobile hotspot?

A mobile hotspot turns your phone into a portable Wi-Fi network.

Instead of connecting devices to your home broadband router, they connect directly to your phone and use your mobile data connection to get online.

That means you can share internet access with:

  • Laptops and tablets
  • Friends’ phones
  • Smart devices
  • Other personal devices when Wi-Fi isn’t available

Most modern smartphones support mobile hotspot functionality, although availability can depend on your device and mobile network plan.

Check if your iPhone supports Personal Hotspot.

On iPhone, hotspot is called a Personal Hotspot. To check whether it’s available, go to:

Settings → Mobile Service (or Mobile Data) → Personal Hotspot

You may also see Settings → Personal Hotspot directly in the main menu on some versions of iOS.

If Personal Hotspot doesn’t appear:

  • Make sure mobile data is turned on
  • Check for a carrier settings update
  • Confirm hotspot is included in your mobile plan

How to set up a Personal Hotspot on iPhone.

Getting started only takes a minute.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Personal Hotspot (or Mobile Service → Personal Hotspot)
  3. Turn on Allow Others to Join
  4. Review or change the Wi-Fi Password

Once enabled, your iPhone becomes visible to nearby devices.

If you use iCloud and share an Apple ID across devices, your own Apple devices may automatically detect and connect to your hotspot.

You can connect in three different ways:

Connect via Wi-Fi (most common).

Wi-Fi is the quickest and easiest way to share your connection. On the device you want to connect:

  1. Open Wi-Fi settings
  2. Select your iPhone from the network list
  3. Enter the hotspot password shown on your iPhone

Your network name usually matches the name of your iPhone.

Tip: Keep the Personal Hotspot screen open during initial setup if another device isn’t discovering it straight away.

Connect via Bluetooth.

If you’d prefer not to use Wi-Fi:

  1. Enable Bluetooth on both devices
  2. Go to Settings → Bluetooth on your iPhone
  3. Pair the devices
  4. Follow the prompts on the device you’re connecting

Bluetooth hotspot connections typically use less power but may offer slower speeds.

Connect via USB.

USB tethering can be useful if you want a stable connection for a laptop.

  1. Turn on Personal Hotspot
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable
  3. Select Trust This Computer if prompted
  4. Choose your iPhone as the internet source if required

Once connected, your computer will use your iPhone’s mobile data connection.

Tips for getting the best hotspot performance.

To keep things running smoothly:

  • Stay in an area with strong 4G or 5G signal
  • Keep your phone plugged in during longer sessions
  • Disconnect unused devices to reduce battery drain
  • Use a secure password to avoid unwanted connections
  • Monitor your data allowance if your plan has limits

Troubleshooting: Hotspot not working?

If devices can’t connect:

  • Toggle Personal Hotspot off and back on
  • Turn Mobile Data off and on
  • Restart both devices
  • Update iOS to the latest version
  • Check your network settings or mobile plan

Still having issues? Your mobile provider may need to enable hotspot access on your account.

And that’s it — your iPhone is now ready to share its connection whenever Wi-Fi isn’t available.
