Modern day dating made simple.
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and while some of you may have found the one, some are still searching for Mr or Mrs Right.
There’s a whole load of stigma around dating apps, but they aren’t all as cheesy and daunting as you may think.
For those of you up to date with Netflix, we imagine The Tinder Swindler has put many of you off forever. Those who haven’t seen it, maybe wait until after the big day.
Tinder is one of a sea of dating apps out there and we thought there was no better time to bring you a handy guide than Valentine’s Day.
Whether you’re on the hunt for something romantic or you’re looking for a friend – there’s something for everyone.
1) Tinder.
There’s no other place to start. It’s the biggest app out there and while it has managed to build quite the rep for cheesy bios and light-hearted flings, it puts you in the drivers seat.
When you’ve downloaded Tinder, you’ll be prompted to create a profile. This will comprise of some of your best selfies and a few lines about yourself.
We recommend something honest, not too cheesy – save your lines for the conversation.
You’ll also be able to set your radius. This is essentially the distance which you want Tinder to search for matches. If you’re looking for someone in your area, set it within this distance. Looking for more of a pen pal? The world’s your oyster.
When Tinder selects people in this radius, you’ll be met with one profile at a time. You can click on their photos, see their name and their profile.
You’ll then have full control over what happens next. If you like what you see, you can swipe right.

On some occasions, your profile has already appeared on their app, and they may have already swiped right on you. If they haven’t, it’s a waiting game to see if you match.
If they’re not your type on paper, you can swipe left. The great thing about Tinder is that people won’t be able to message you unless you match, likewise you can’t reach out to them.
There’s a whole bunch of other cool features like a ‘super like’ where a person is informed that you’re actually very fond of them – or their profile at least.
It’s also free, meaning you can save your pennies for that first date. There are subscriptions you can sign up for which grants you a number of extra things like additional likes.
Tinder is available to download from the App Store and the Google Play Store.
2) Bumble.
This sounds like a brand of honey or something, but we promise it’s real – and it’s pretty sweet. So sweet in fact that Apple recognised Bumble as one of the top apps in 2021.
Android fans shouldn’t worry though, Bumble will work for them too. Bumble gives the power to women.
On this app, women make the first move as soon as two people connect and are a part of each other’s hive.

We promised no cheese, but this is adorable. There’s something so special about relating dating to bumble bees connecting and sharing hives – beautiful.
When you’ve connected with someone, you have just 24 hours to make contact, or the connection disappears forever.
If you’re not looking for dates, you can enjoy the BFF feature and just link up with people on a friendship level.
Like Tinder, you can opt for Bumble Boost upgrades to enjoy a number of exclusive perks – but these come at a cost. Otherwise, it’s totally free.
3) Match.com.
Match.com has been a hugely popular site for as long as we can remember. It allows iOS and Android users to set up online profiles and upload some photos of themselves. You’ll even be able to link up your Match account to your Apple and Android Watches!
You’ll be able to add voice and video snippets to your profile, so if you’re a sucker for an accent, this is your site.
Vibe Check is a relatively new feature that’ll let you video chat with your matches – when you’re ready of course.
Our favourite feature of this site is the safety feature. We’d hope that you’d never need to use it, but if you ever felt unsafe on a date, you can alert your friends.
Again, Match.com has a subscription you can sign up to in order to see who has looked at your profile or liked your prescription – but it’s free to access all of its basic features.
4) Hinge.
Hinge is a little different to the other dating apps that we’ve discussed. Hinge’s driving focus is what we all love – interesting conversations.
Dizziness, from swiping left and right then left and right again, is a thing of the past. Instead, Hinge offers a highly-detailed profile that you can fill in with any details you want and stories too.
Got a funny story that always goes down a treat? Get it on your profile! But make sure it’s good because people can choose to like and comment on it – no pressure.
You can also comment on other people’s stories too, generating some great conversation starters in no time.
Hinge is available to download for free on iOS and Android.
5) eharmony.
eharmony was the first to bring the art of science into dating. They were one of the firsts to use an algorithmic system to try and get the best matches possible.
Before you get started, you will be asked to fill out a Relationship Questionnaire. This may seem strange at first, but it’s perfect really.
It will personally match you with other people who share similar interests as you, cutting out any time wasting indefinitely.

Like Tinder, you’ll be able to set a radius and be given a selection of matches that you can connect with providing they feel the same.
You can subscribe to premium and access whole new discovery options and also be able to see who recently viewed your profile.
Download eharmony for free today on iOS or Android.
